Old Business
The tolerance resolution was adopted by an e-mail vote. It has been posted

New Business
Previous to the meeting Williamson forwarded to the Senate an e-mail outlining
his Resolution Concerning IHL Funding Formula. The e-mail and attachment
outlined growing inequities in funding between state universities in
Mississippi. The resolution reads: The Faculty Senate of the University of
Mississippi supports the Chancellor of the University of Mississippi in his
efforts to encourage the Institutes of Higher Learning’s Board of Trustees to
acknowledge and correct these inequities so that the University of Mississippi
may pursue its mission with fair allocations of State funding. After some
discussion the resolution was adopted.
Ewing proposed a resolution regarding on-campus daycare for staff and faculty.
Resolution is referred to University Services Committee.
Chair’s Report
*Provost Retirement and Plans for Search
Williamson reported on Provost’s upcoming plans for retirement (at that time
projected for Aug. 2008) and indicated that the Senate should be involved in
any search for a replacement. The Senate discussed.
*Previous to the meeting Williamson forwarded to the Senate an e-mail from
Nathan Tublitz and Virginia Shepherd, Co-Chairs, Coalition on Intercollegiate
Athletics (COIA). They were asking the University of Mississippi to join. The
Senate discussed.
*Williamson has agreed to co-host a meeting in South Carolina this Spring to
try and create an active SEC Faculty Senate Council.
Committee Reports
*Governance
Decision by governance committee to host the vist by Larry Gerber announced.
for December 11 to discuss the issue of shared governance at the University of
Mississippi. Professor Gerber is First Vice-President of the American
Association of University Professors and a former chair of the AAUP Committee
on Governance. The purpose of this meeting is to assess and discuss the
shared governance “climate” on our campus and to collect ideas for a Statement
of Policy on Shared Governance that the Senate is in the process of preparing
for the Chancellor.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Thad Cochran National Center for
Natural Products Research, Auditorium 1044 and is open to all interested
members of the university faculty.
After the session, those wishing to continue the discussion more informally
are invited to gather at the home of Senator Elizabeth Payne for wine,
cheese, and desserts. Senator Payne lives at 633 Park Drive, Oxford.
